for months i have received comments and emails from people wondering if i was going to post a tutorial on how to make my ruffle scarves... i was selling them at the time, so i of course said no! haha :) but i have decided to no longer sell them, so... it's TUTORIAL TIME!!! :)
here's what you need...
- 2 yards of fabric (i got $1 a yard fabric from walmart)
- thread
- a sewing machine
fold your fabric in half and cut it into four equal strips.
then lay the ends of the strips together and sew them. this will make one VERY long strip!
then set the tension on your sewing machine to the highest setting (mine is nine).
and set the stitch length to the longest setting (mine is five).
now start sewing!! sew down one side, then down the other... don't forget to backstitch, so it doesn't come undone!
now you are done!!
beautiful. ruffly. love it.

paige

This is very pretty! I'm going to try making this scarf. Thank you for posting!
ReplyDeleteThat is amazing, thanks so much for sharing with us! I think I know what people are getting from me for Christmas now. ;)
ReplyDeletepretty! I'm going to make some for christmas presents for my sister in laws! What weight of fabric (cotton?) did you use? and does it fray?
ReplyDeleteAdorable! I know several people who may be getting one of these for Christmas this year! :)
ReplyDeleteDo you like to use a certain type of material or does one kind work better than another?
Very pretty! I have the same questions as Jen - What type of fabric did you use and does it fray?
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing!
This is adorable! I am terrible at sewing, but might have to dig out my machine and give this one a try!
ReplyDeleteWhat an awesome idea you had! Thank you SO MUCH for sharing the tut. It looks so complex when it's done - I'd never have dreamed it was so easy to make. I'm going to have to try one...maybe one for each of my daughters. Hugs and thank yous!
ReplyDeleteI don't have a sewing machine or access to a sewing machine, would this be something that you might consider selling in your shop? If you could please respond to me

Thank you so much!
That really is amazing. :) Thanks for the tutorial!! Looks easy enough......
ReplyDeleteThat is really nice. I made my daughter, who is 7, a ruffle scarf last Winter... she looked at me like I was nuts. It was very cute though.
ReplyDeleteLove this pretty scarf and would love to share it on my blog with a link back to you if that is ok.

Oh it is gorgeous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I will definitely have to do this for the Fall and Winter wardrobe.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fabulous tutorial! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI love this:) I have been wanting to make something like this but couldn't figure it out--TFS! What fabric is this? It looks sheer? Does it fray? It looks like your sewing was done in the middle--but you say to stitch down the sides--so is it sewn twice? Once on each side? Or in the middle too?
ReplyDeleteTHANKS for sharing and I appreciate your help with my questions!! sbmmhoover at yahoo dot com
This is gorgeous Paige! I'm going to pin it ;) then I'm sure you'll get lots of visits coming through pinterest!!
ReplyDeleteOmg I LOVE the skirts at the top AND the scarf! Super cute style you have! Check out my blog and my website, I make and sell cute, fun pencil holders! Take care!!

This is soooo good - this is my 1st visit to your blog :) Do you sell this scarf? My head hurts just thinking about making this - but oh, how I want one - in purple!!! Gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteYou're so clever! What a beautiful scarf!!
ReplyDeleteGreat tutorial... I'll be giving this a try soon! Love the blog!
ReplyDeleteHow wide is each piece, I understand they are each 2 yards long - right?
ReplyDeleteWhat does she mean by 'sew down one side, then the other'? Sorry for the dumb question, I'm new to sewing.
ReplyDelete@Teresa, they are 12 inches wide, but that can be adjusted depending on how wide you like your scarves!
ReplyDelete@tricia to create the gathers, you need to stitch two (or more) rows- one on each side of the fabric.
hope this helps! if you have any more questions, feel free to email me! :)
I recently tried making this scarf and had quite a difficult time. I'm about average when it comes to sewing skills and I thought this would be quite easy. From my experience, it seems that you need very sheer, light-weight fabric for this to work. I tested the machine settings on several types of fabric and could not get the "bunching" effect. After reading other blogs, I noticed that elastic thread worked for others. Are there any other pointers you could give those of us trying to create your beautiful scarf?
ReplyDeletei have had a difficult time getting the gathers to stay put in between the back stitching. Every time I pull the scarf to tie it on, the gathering shifts - it seems very fragile. I've tried a simple straight stitch over the gather stitch and it still moves. Any other tips? Thanks for a fun idea though! I'll keep playing with it.
ReplyDeleteLOVE LOVE LOVE the scarf tutorial! Thank you SO much! I made a couple of little changes I thought I would share in case anyone is interested...
ReplyDeleteAfter sewing the strips together I rounded the corners at the ends. Rather than sewing/ruffling in two straight lines down the strip, I sewed an elongated oval. The ends look more finished that way.
I am also going to reinforce the scarf by going over the stitching with a satin embroidery stitch. I am thinking I might use a metallic thread to give it some sparkle!
Thank you again Paige for this wonderful gift idea, you rock! :)
What an awesome project! Just wanted to let you know I featured it today on "You Sew Rock Me Fridays" at sewrockin.com.
ReplyDeleteYou can see it here: http://www.sewrockin.com/2011/11/11/you-sew-rock-me-fridays-4/

now start sewing!! sew down one side, then down the other... don't forget to backstitch, so it doesn't come undone...I do not understand what you mean by sew down on side, then down the other...do you mean you sewn done the piece in about 5 inches or so and the same on the other side or do you turn the piece at the end of come up the other side? I am not a real sewer and need more details I guess. but I love this rufffled look scarves..Can I use any material? I have tons of vintage rose material...pillow ticking, etc..does this only work on light material? Thanks, Becky
